Major highlight:
Sugar on its own does not cause diabetes! Infact, diabetes is what results in a high blood sugar level. However, it is important to know that high consumption of dietary sugars will expose you to health conditions that can lead to the development of diabetes (diabetes type 2)

Sugar is a common ingredient found in many of our favorite foods and beverages. While it can add flavor and enjoyment to our meals, it's important to be mindful of our sugar consumption for the sake of our health. Today, we will explore the recommended sugar intake for different age groups, helping you make informed choices, maintain a balanced diet and give you a better nutritious life!.

Why is Sugar a Concern? Why should I follow recommendations for consuming sugar?

Excessive sugar intake has been associated with various health issues, including:

  • Obesity, tooth decay, type 2 diabetes, weight gain and obesity, hypertension and an increased risk of developing chronic diseases

By understanding the recommended sugar intake for different age groups, you can make conscious decisions to reduce your sugar consumption and promote better overall health.

Recommended Sugar Intake by Age Group:

1. Infants (0-12 months):

It is recommended to avoid added sugars in the diet of infants. Just as you may have heard and believe it or not, Breast milk or infant formula provides the necessary nutrition during this stage.

2. Toddlers and Preschoolers (1-5 years):

- Limit added sugars to no more than 25 grams (6 teaspoons) per day for children in this age group. Encourage whole foods and limit sugary snacks, juices, and sweetened beverages.

3. Children and Adolescents (6-18 years):

- A daily sugar limit of no more than 25 grams (6 teaspoons) for children and adolescents is recommended. Encourage nutrient-rich foods and limit the consumption of sugary cereals, snacks, sodas, and desserts.

4. Adults (19 years and older):

- You are advised to take a daily sugar limit of no more than 25 grams (6 teaspoons) for women and 36 grams (9 teaspoons) for men. Be mindful of added sugars in processed foods, sugary drinks, desserts, and condiments.

Tips for Reducing Sugar Intake:

- Read food labels: Check ingredient lists for added sugars, as they can be found under various names such as sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, or dextrose.

- Limit sugary beverages: Replace sugary sodas and fruit juices with water, herbal teas, or homemade flavored water.

- Cook at home: Prepare meals and snacks from scratch to have control over the amount of added sugar.

- Find natural alternatives: Use natural sweeteners like fruits, cinnamon, or honey to add sweetness to your dishes.

In our next post, we will be talking about Honey and most importantly if it's okay to use it as sweetners for infants, toddlers and people with diabetes. Stay tuned ☺️

Understanding the recommended sugar intake for different age groups is crucial for maintaining a healthy diet and reducing the risk of various health issues. By being mindful of our sugar consumption and making informed choices, we can prioritize nutrient-rich foods and promote our overall well-being. Remember that opting for whole, unprocessed foods is a reliable approach to managing sugar intake throughout life.

Stay informed

Cheers to a better #Nutritious Life 🤍
