Have you ever purchased a food item (maybe milk, fruits and vegetables, cereals, packaged goods etc) and realized it tastes strange? You are not alone! (PS:Check out the tips at the end)

With the increasing need for supply of food, There is equally an increase in production of fake foods by what we call food adulteration resulting in very low quality food.


It is therefore very important for you to understand; how to identify this fake foods from the real food. In this blog post we will look at the; examples of adulterated foods, health effects of adulteration, and how to identify this foods so at the end you and your household are consuming safe and healthy meals.

food adulteration is the addition of inferior quality substances, subtraction or replacement of a vital nutrient with one of a lesser quality.

While you may not be very familiar with this word "Adulteration" we use it everyday but in different ways, to refer to food that we feel has been tampered with.

Some examples of adulterated foods

Common examples of adulterated foods are

  • Fruits and other foods that are forced to ripe ( sprayed or injected with chemicals)

  • Milk ( with chalk powder)

  • Honey ( with sugar and corn syrups)

  • Tea ( with other dark seeds powders that are inedible)

  • Cooking oils especially the retailed oils ( with Lard-animal fat that is very high in cholesterol,

  • Some Packaged goods ( imitations made with similar ingredients that have zero health benefits)

  • Some Canned products ( imitation products made bypersons from their homes other than industry)

  • Curry powder ( with saw dust)


How to identify adulterated foods

Here are some steps to follow to check if your food is adulterated.

  • Read labelings of packaged and canned goods well to make sure it's not an imitation of a company product

  • Avoid buying canned products that look squeezed

  • Soak any fruits or vegetables that you suspect was colored in water

  • Check expiry dates before purchase of goods

Effects of consuming adulterated foods

Adulterated foods pose serious health problems why?, because;

  1. Most often, adulterants-substances used for adulteration- are chemicals.

  2. Consuming such food increases the toxicity in the body.

  3. Eating food that is less nutritive or no longer nutritive for your body.

  4. The addition of chemical adulterants and colours many times prove to be fatal, as they pose an onset of health risks and also introduce cancers

  • Avoid buying foods that are evenly riped with no dark spots at all as their ripening is likely to have been by spraying or injection with chemical

  • Canned or tinned foods must be checked for any leakages or puffing before buying.
